Bona DriFast Stain: Fast-Drying Color for Cape Cod Projects

By JR · JR Hardwood Supplies December 3, 2025 5 min read

What Is Bona DriFast Stain?

Bona DriFast Stain is a waterborne wood floor stain designed for fast project turnaround. Where DuraSeal QuickCoat, the most widely used stain on Cape Cod floors, takes 2 to 4 hours to dry before topcoating, DriFast can be ready for a finish coat in 30 to 45 minutes under normal conditions. On a one-day project, that difference can mean stain, three finish coats, and light traffic all within a single workday.

Like all professional Bona products, DriFast is only available through authorized distributors. JR Hardwood Supplies in Falmouth is the Cape Cod source for the full Bona professional line.

DriFast vs. DuraSeal QuickCoat: Which One to Use?

Both are reliable stains used by Cape Cod contractors, but they have different chemistries and use cases.

DuraSeal QuickCoat is an oil-based penetrating stain. It soaks into the wood grain for a natural, rich color. Oil-based chemistry tends to produce deeper, warmer tones and works well with both oil-based and waterborne topcoats (test compatibility first). Dry time is 2 to 4 hours, extending to 4 to 6 hours in high Cape Cod summer humidity.

Bona DriFast is a waterborne stain. It dries much faster (30 to 45 minutes), has much lower VOC, and is fully compatible with Bona waterborne finishes without a seal coat buffer step. The color depth is slightly different from oil-based stains, generally producing a cleaner, slightly less deep tone. Some contractors prefer this for contemporary interiors with lighter palette choices.

Choose DriFast when:

  • The project timeline requires stain and finish to happen on the same day
  • You are working in an occupied home where low VOC is a priority
  • The design calls for a cleaner, less warm color tone
  • You are already using Bona waterborne finish and want guaranteed compatibility

Choose DuraSeal QuickCoat when:

  • The floor needs a warm, traditional stain color (Early American, Special Walnut)
  • You have time for the full dry cycle and prefer oil-based chemistry
  • The project calls for one of DuraSeal's 40-plus color options that are not available in DriFast

Application Notes

Apply DriFast with a lamb's wool applicator or stain brush, working with the grain. Because it dries faster than oil-based stain, work in smaller sections and wipe back excess quickly. At 30 to 45 minutes, the dry window for recoat is much shorter than QuickCoat, so preparation and pacing matter more.

DriFast is compatible with Bona Traffic HD and Bona Mega One without an intermediate seal coat, which is one of its practical advantages over oil-based stains in a waterborne finish workflow.
